Job Summary

The Department of Green Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Michigan-Flint is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented student to assist in preparing materials for Organic Chemistry laboratory courses during the Winter 2026 semester. In this role, you will collaborate with laboratory staff while independently managing a set of assigned responsibilities crucial to the smooth operation of our labs.

This position offers a moderately flexible schedule, with a commitment of approximately 8 hours per week and potential for up to 12 hours based on departmental needs. Your weekly schedule will be determined in partnership with the Laboratory Supervisor upon hire.

Responsibilities*

The primary responsibility of the organic chemistry lab prep attendant is to prepare chemicals and other materials needed for their assigned lab courses. In addition, all prep attendants are expected to:

  • Know locations and appropriate usage of all safety equipment
  • Follow all departmental safety rules
  • Ensure good housekeeping in the prep space and in the teaching labs
  • Prepare lab set ups in conjunction with the Lab Coordinator
  • Transition lab experiments on a weekly basis
  • Perform inventory of assigned lab prep space
  • Assist with preparations of other lab courses, as needed
  • Ensuring that equipment are stored appropriately
  • Reporting any broken equipment to the Lab Supervisor

Required Qualifications*

  • Must be a currently enrolled UM-Flint student
  • Successful completion of CHM 331 Organic Chemistry I lab
  • Recommendation by a chemistry laboratory instructor or staff
  • A basic understanding of laboratory safety rules, chemical safety, and safety control measures
  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemistry laboratory materials, methods, and equipment

Desired Qualifications*

  • Knowledge of the Globally Harmonized System
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience preparing and/or standardizing chemical solutions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Display outstanding attention to detail and organizational skills

Modes of Work

Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
