Managing Editor (Student/Work-Study)

Job Summary
The Managing editor of the Michigan Times will be responsible for assisting editor-in chief of school paper in daily operations as well as assigning, editing, and writing content for the paper.
Responsibilities*
- Working with the editor in chief to create and carry out short-and long-term goals of the student newspaper.
- Developing and assigning story ideas.
- Assisting in overseeing a group of reporters/writers and guiding them as needed to meet expectations.
- Facilitating or co-facilitating regular editorial meetings.
- Curating editorial schedule for online and printed content.
- Critiquing and editing stories and coaching writers through revisions.
- Developing and assigning ideas for photos and art to accompany stories.
Required Qualifications*
- Current UM-Flint Student
- Willingness to learn Associated Press style
- Willingness to learn and uphold ethical norms of journalism
- 2.5 GPA or higher
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Strong leadership skills
Desired Qualifications*
- Strong interest in writing and/or journalism
Modes of Work
Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan

Background Screening
