Under physician/professional nursing supervision, performs a variety of patient care and support duties to assist the clinical staff of the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Laboratory. Participates in quality management and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the full supervision of a departmental director/manager or designee who assigns and reviews work for conformance with established policies, procedures, and standards.
- Obtains and records pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure either manually or by automatic machinery. Communicates problems, adverse reactions, or unusual changes in patients or equipment to supervising nurse.
- Documents patient care rendered per medical Center policy.
- Prepares procedure room, equipment, and supplies required for each procedure. Ensures appropriate equipment and supplies are available for procedures. Arranges for necessary equipment and supplies with other departments and healthcare providers as necessary and under direction of Registered Nurse.
- Assists physicians with diagnostic, therapeutic, and emergency endoscopic procedures including maneuvering tubes for astroscopes and colonoscopies, suctioning fluids from patients, placing EKG pads and running EKG strips on patients, disconnecting and turning off/on oxygen valves, inserting bite blocks, and removing tissue for biopsies.
- Transports patients to/from unit as required.
- Cleans and sterilizes/disinfects all endoscopic equipment and work surfaces. Prepares cleaning solutions as necessary for cleaning equipment. Disposes of expendable supplies according to hospital procedures.
- Initiates and terminates reprocessing procedure according to unit policy/procedure.
- Collects and delivers specimens for evaluations as necessary.
- Assists in maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment. Obtains supplies from various units and departments of Medical Center. Orders supplies manually or via computerized information system.
- Files/pulls records and patient charts.
- Maintains cleanliness of patient care areas, cleaning room, and storage areas.
- Performs ancillary clerical duties such as answering phone, taking and relaying messages, greeting patients, and updating schedules.
- Attends educations/development programs as assigned. Assists in orientation of newly assigned employees.
- Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently, and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served.
