Performs diagnostic echocardiographic studies on adult and pediatric patients for use by physician in diagnoses of heart diseases and heart studies. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior.Works under the general supervision of a department head or designee who reviews work for effectiveness and conformance to established policies, procedures, and standards and the medical supervision of a cardiologist.


  • High school graduate and/or GED equivalent.
  • Completion of an echocardiographer program -OR- one (1) year of experience in echocardiography.
  • Experience in pediatric/neonatology echocardiography preferred.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of universal precautions and right-to-know regulations and procedures as related to echocardiography.
  • Ability to accurately perform m-mode, sector, color Doppler, and transesophageal echocardiograms on adult and pediatric patients.
  • Ability to main complete, accurate, and legible patient documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with patients, Medical Center, staff, physicians, and the general public.
  • SPECIAL NOTE:
  • Candidates that are registered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a cardiac sonographer will be allocated at a level 140. Candidates that are not registered will be allocated at a level 137.

    1. Performs diagnostic echocardiographic studies on adult and pediatric parties including m-mode, sector, color Doppler, transesophageal echocardiograms, and cardiac studies.

    2. Interviews and prepares patient for examination. Explains procedures to patient to obtain cooperation and to reduce anxieties.

    3. Observes and cares for patient throughout examination to ensure patient safety and comfort.

    4. Assists physicians and reviews test results with interpreting physician.

    5. Communicates preliminary results to referring physician in absence of cardiologist or upon cardiologist request.

    6. Immediately notifies cardiologist or referring physician of unexpected abnormal findings. Schedules further testing if indicated.

    7. Prepares examination reports for physicians to aid in monitoring cardiac/vascular disorders.

    8. Instructs physicians and students regarding basic knowledge, techniques, and/or planning procedures of cardiac ultrasound.

    9. Routinely cleans area and restocks equipment to ensure performance of routine and emergency studies.

    10. Performs quality control checks on equipment to ensure proper operation and perform minor repairs and calibrations. Requests service as necessary.

    11. Properly processes requisitions, hospital and physician billing information, activity statistics, quality assurance data, and other record keeping materials as necessary.

    12. Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, reactive competently, and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served.

    13. Performs other related duties as required. Utilizes new improvements and/or technology that relate to job assignment.
