Beginning with a basic knowledge, assumes a variety of grounds keeping tasks in order to maintain the Medical Center's grounds in a clean, safe, and attractive condition. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Medical Center's Courtesy Standards. Works under the supervision of the departmental director or designee who reviews and inspects work performed.

1. Plants, cultivates, waters, fertilizes weeds, edges, sprays, mows and trims lawns, flower beds, shrubs, scrubs, and trees. Utilizes riding mowers, hand mowers, tractors, trimmers, and other equipment in performance of grounds keeping duties.


2. Inspects and performs light maintenance and repair of hand and power tools, machinery, and equipment including minor adjusting, fueling, lubricating, and cleaning. Documents equipment maintenance activities.


3. Removes leaves, trash, ice, and snow from walks, stairs, entrances, driveways, parking lots and structures, and other areas manually and by means of motorized equipment. Applies salt and other deicing agents.


4. Cuts down and removes fallen and dead trees using power saws, hand saws, and axes. Attempts to preserve damaged trees as necessary.


5. Uses compactors to dispose of all types of trash including broken concrete, leaves, litter, and bottles. Removes animals, birds, related waste, and insects from grounds.


6. Assists in performance of landscaping, park, and lawn projects. Builds, maintains, and repairs fences, walks, outdoor furniture, and play areas.


7. Performs variety of related tasks such as receiving and unloading supplies, materials, and equipment; moving and replacing parking blocks; and repairing sidewalks, parking lots, and barriers. Provides input in development of bid specifications as requested.


8. Disposes of all waste materials and handles/applies chemicals as required by regulatory agencies.


9. Decorates building and grounds for holidays and other events and required. Installs, removes, stores, maintains, and repairs ornaments and decorations.


10. Maintains, repairs, programs, adjusts, and assists in the installation of irrigation systems.


11. Documents all grounds keeping work performed using manual and/or computerized record keeping.


12. As directed, performs duties that would be assigned to a Building Maintainer and/or Maintenance Mechanic Trainee position.
