Job Description

Under supervision and in accordance with standard procedures performs a variety of basic and routine tasks relating to the pre-preparation, assembly, and distribution of food for Medical Center patients, visitors, and staff. Promotes meal assistance for all patients on a daily basis, including meal selection, service, and retrieval. Accurately serves food and beverages to patients in accordance with the patient's prescription diet. Verbally communicates patient concerns with the clinical dietitians such as education needs and inadequate meal consumption. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all infection control and safety standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the direct supervision of a food service manager, supervisor, or designee who assigns and inspects work for conformance to established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  1. Dishes up cold foods such as juices, salads, milk, and desserts in specific quantities and/or amounts for tray assembly.
  2. Sets up service stations. Sets up patient trays. Apportions and places food servings on plates and trays according to diet list or menu. Places necessary items such as eating utensils, napkins, and condiments on trays.
  3. Examines patient trays for accuracy/completeness. Alerts co-workers and/or supervisors of errors and/or corrects errors prior to releasing patient trays. Informs supervisor of problems.
  4. Cleans and sanitizes patient reusable works.
  5. Maintains any and all cart and small equipment in orderly and sanitary condition after each use.
  6. Prepares, assembles, distributes, and collects patient meal trays, snacks, and nourishments. Delivers late or deferred trays throughout medical canter. Distributes nourishments to patients. Assists patients with making menu selections.
  7. Maintains clean, neat work area and appearance. Maintains sanitary conditions throughout kitchen.
  8. Takes and records temperature of food items and equipment. Provides supervisor with results.
  9. Obtains current diet changes and makes appropriate changes to dietary records and menus.
  10. Checks menus against dietary records to ensure properly completed menus. Modifies menus as necessary to conform to prescribed diet and communicates modifications to appropriate party.
  11. Answers phones and records or relays messages to appropriate party.
  12. Builds patient meal tray during entire meal periods and ensures tray contents match menu.
  13. Utilizes automated tablet to record and transfer meal selections to computer. Host/Hostess serves up to 30 patients per shift.
  14. Performs other related duties as required. Utilizes new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignment.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate and/or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English.
  • Basic knowledge of food handling techniques.
  • Physical ability to be on feet for long periods of time and to endure warm humid environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to follow and understand oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with patients, employees, and visitors.
