Job Description
Independently provides direct consultation to patients on a variety of medical-surgical units on an on needed basis. Assists individuals and their families to deal with numerous complex medical, psychiatric, and substance abuse problems in both medical and psychiatric settings. Recommends, prescribes, and monitors psychotropic medications in collaboration with a supervising physician. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the administrative supervision of an administrator or departmental director or designee and the clinical direction of a physician/psychiatrist who review work for conformance to established procedures, policies, standards. Exercises partial supervision over students within the clinical service.
Responsibilities
- Performs comprehensive psychiatric, substance abuse, and physical assessments and evaluations of patient. Compiles patient medical data including health and mental health history. Orders medical consults for patients as needed.
- Performs complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in diagnosing medical and psychiatric problems and prescribing necessary treatment and services for quality patient care. Orders, interprets, and evaluates laboratory and diagnostic tests.
- Prescribes, recommends, and monitors drugs or other forms of treatment for patient.
- Evaluates findings and assists patients and families in developing treatment care plans. Collaborates with other health care team members as needed.
- Instructs and counsels patient regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regiments. Assists with lifestyle changes that promote recovery and independence.
- Educates individuals, families, and community regarding treatment of mental illness.
- Contacts supervising physician appropriately and consistently for consultation/case review when clinical situation is outside of practitioner's scope of practice.
- Identifies resources in community for patients and families and assists them in their use. Performs triage, consultation, and makes referrals to other services as necessary.
- Writes routine orders for inpatients. Coordinates care of patients throughout course of illness. Recommends psychiatric/mental health treatment, including hospitalization.
- Performs mental health duties such as assessment of altered mental status, crisis intervention, risk assessment for potential harm to self or others, and ordering and discontinuing sitters.
- Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently, and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing from either an accredited Clinical Nurse Specialty or Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program.
- Two (2) years of experience working in inpatient psychiatric mental health setting.
- Experience working with severely, persistently, chronically mentally ill adult population preferred.
- Familiarity with assessment using the DSM-V for Mental Disorders.
- Familiarity with writing treatment plans.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, families, physicians, agencies, Medical Center personnel, and the general public.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Current ANCC certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist or Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
- Current valid license in State of Michigan as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
- Current valid license in State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse.
