Job Description

Union: Non-Union

Status: Full time

Schedule: 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Plan, develop, implement and evaluate educational programs for orientation, inservice education and continuing education in an assigned areas. Instructs nursing personnel in disease processes and nursing management of sub-class. Is involved in education to meet regulatory standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the administrative direction of a nurse manager or designee.

Responsibilities

  1. Design, implement and evaluate programs for unit orientation, and staff development.
  2. Develop and implement evidence based practices and protocols.
  3. Collaborates with Nurse Manager, in education development and implementation.
  4. Evaluates educational needs of nurses on any assigned nursing units.
  5. Design and implement educational programs to meet accreditation and practice standards.
  6. Provide leadership for and participate in formal and informal instruction of nursing staff and students.
  7. Collaborates with departments across the institution regarding learning needs of the area.
  8. Uses a variety of teaching strategies and selects methodologies based on desired learning outcomes, learner needs and environmental and other constraints.
  9. Attends meetings both internal and external to the medical center as needed.
  10. Audits patient documentation to discover any deficiencies in staff knowledge and re-educates as needed.
  11. Monitors quality data and develops educational programs as needed.
  12. Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently, and treat (if appropriate) the unique needs of patient age groups served.
  13. Performs other related duties as required. Utilizes new improvements and/or technology that relate to job assignment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Associate's degree in Nursing (see Special Note).
  • At least two (2) years experience in nursing care of patients in the title of the sub-class.
  • Ability to independently manage patients in the assigned area (medical/surgical, critical care, pediatrics or obstetrics).
  • Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with patients, families, public, physicians and hospital personnel.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • License and registration to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan. For critical care sub-class, ACLS Instructor certification status must be attained within one (1) year of appointment to classification. Incumbents progress to the classification of Clinical Specialist upon completion of Masters degree and three (3) years satisfactory clinical experience within the last five (5) years.

SPECIAL NOTE: Employees hired into this classification possessing an Associate's degree in Nursing must obtain a Bachelor's degree in Nursing two years (2) from date of permanent appointment to this classification. Failure to attain a Bachelor's degree in Nursing shall result in the employee's termination.
