Job Description

Assists pharmacists in processing medication orders for inpatients and outpatients. Performs technical tasks associated with the preparation, packaging, and dispensing of medications. Prepares reports and delivers completed medication orders to nursing units. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior.Works under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist who assigns and checks work for proper completion and conformance with established procedures.

Responsibilities

  1. Reads and interprets medication orders written by physicians for inpatients and outpatients.

  2. Under supervision of Registered Pharmacist, prepares injectable medications using appropriate aseptic technique including large and small volume parenteral solutions, total parenteral nutrition, and preparation of chemotherapy. Maintains records of clean work area.

  3. Prepares controlled substances for delivery to patient units. Maintains records of controlled substances prepared and/or delivered. Reports discrepancies as needed.

  4. Inventories and restocks dispensing areas and other areas of pharmacy as required.

  5. Prepares and dispenses floor stock medications upon receipt of requisitions.

  6. Compiles and maintains records of medications dispensed.

  7. Delivers medications to patient care areas as required.

  8. Checks in orders, creates charges, and maintains necessary records.

  9. Assists Registered Pharmacist in monthly nursing unit reviews.

  10. Checks stock in emergency boxes. Refills as necessary. Maintains related records.

  11. Prepackages medications and maintains necessary records.

  12. Prepares and maintains extemporaneous compounds as needed.

  13. Accesses computer/information systems for retrieval or input of information.

  14. Adheres to sterile, non-sterile, and hazardous drug preparation guidelines in compliance with medical center policies and regulatory agency requirements.

  15. Performs other related duties as required. Utilizes new improvements and/or technology that relate to job assignment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED. [See Necessary Special Requirement.]
  • Ability to type related Pharmacy documents accurately.
  • Ability to perform semi-complex mathematical computations including basic algebra, decimals, fractions, and proportions.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain simple clerical records and to prepare reports from such records.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with fellow workers and other Medical Center employees.
  • NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
  • Must have a valid Pharmacy Technician license in the State of Michigan at hire. As a condition of continued employment must maintain a Pharmacy Technician OR Pharmacy Intern license.
