HVAC Technician
Job Description
Performs skilled and technical level work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Installs, alters, and repairs refrigeration systems. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Compiles with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior.
Works under the supervision of the departmental director or designee who assigns and checks work for compliance with standards. May exercise partial supervision over a few semi-skilled personnel or apprentices.
Responsibilities
- Performs skilled work in installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in accordance with plans, specifications, and appropriate building codes.
- Performs and assists in fabricating, installing, testing, and balancing climate controls and heat transfer assemblies and systems.
- Assists in preparation of specifications for proposed systems. Determines required performance levels and submits dates for such systems. Performs studies to determine cost.
- Fabricates non-standard parts for systems. Utilizes metal working machinery and assembles systems using hand and power tools.
- Installs test fixtures, apparatus, and controls. Conducts operational tests under specified conditions. Installs pneumatic/electric controls for a variety of equipment.
- Installs and repairs refrigeration systems according to plans, specifications, and appropriate Building Codes, using knowledge of refrigeration, structural layout, and design components.
- Repairs and alters compressors, condensers, pipes, pumps, and variety of equipment.
- Makes emergency repairs and adjustments. Keeps necessary records of service and repairs of assigned equipment.
- Performs other related duties as required. Utilizes new improvement and/or technologies that relate to the job assignment.
Qualifications
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High school graduate and/or GED equivalent.
- Journeyman level plumber or pipe fitter with documented training in HVAC systems OR
- Four (4) years of experience as a repairer in the Building Trades, Maintenance, or Industrial areas with documented completion of an approved program in Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration.
- Considerable knowledge of the hazards, and precautionary methods peculiar to the trade.
- Working knowledge of the warm air and hydronics heating code.
- Skill in trouble-shooting HVAC and refrigeration problems.
- Manuel dexterity to use a variety of hand/power tools.
- Ability to work from drawings and specifications and to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to stand, stoop, climb ladders, etc.
- Ability to read blueprints, equipment manuals, equipment tags, etc.
- Ability to withstand extremes in temperature.
- Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety of one's self, others and equipment.
- Ability to coordinate assignments and work with other trades.
- Ability to work harmonious with patients, patient families, Medical Center staff, physicians, visitors, and the general public.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a valid Warm Air or Hydronics Heating License is necessary within two (2) years of appointment to this classification. Failure to attain a valid Warm Air or Hydronics Heating License within the two (2) year period shall result in the employee's termination of employment.
- Environmental Protection Agency approved certification for refrigeration handling.
