Apply for a Board, Committee or Commission
The Genesee County Board of Commissioners is seeking individuals interested in serving their community on the various Boards, Committees, Commissions and Agencies. This application provides the Board of Commissioners with basic information about yourself.
Committee Description
The Board of County Commissioners created an Opioid Settlement Steering Committee to aid in directing spending of opioid settlement dollars. These initial appointments will be for staggered terms, consistent with the Committee's Bylaws. Each subsequent appointment will be for a 3-year term.
Genesee County continues to face one of the highest substance use burdens in Michigan, with an overdose death rate of 57.0 - nearly double the statewide rate of 29.2. In response to the nationwide opioid crisis, Genesee County joined national litigation against manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies for their role in contributing to opioid misuse and overdose deaths.
As a result of these settlements, Genesee County is projected to receive approximately $18 million over an 18-year period. As of November 2025, the County has received roughly $7 million, which is being directed toward evidence-based strategies that support prevention, treatment, recovery, and harm-reduction efforts for our community.
The establishment of the Opioid Settlement Steering Team was approved by the Genesee County Board of Commissioners in 2025 to guide local prevention, treatment, and recovery programs using settlement funds.
The 11-member Opioid Settlement Steering Committee, according to its bylaws, is required to include at least one member with expertise in each of the following areas:
- Substance Use Disorder (lived experience)
- Behavioral Health
- Healthcare (including hospitals)
- Public Safety
- Judicial System
At this time, there is one vacancy for an individual with lived experience with Substance Use Disorder.
Please indicate in your application which of the above criteria apply to you. Note: Only applicants with lived experience with Substance Use Disorder will be considered at this time.
