Job Description

On-site: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Heritage Center/Factory One/Flint, Michigan on a full-time basis.

The Role:

The Heritage Vehicle Collection Lead is responsible for managing the overall vehicle collection of the Heritage Center and overseeing the care, repair, restoration, and movement of those vehicles. This includes working closely with personnel from Design, Engineering, Marketing, Company Vehicle Operations, and other involved parties within General Motors. This person also supports the work of the Heritage archive, exhibits, events, and business development personnel who operate with the Heritage Center.

In the near term, this leader will support up-front design needs of the Heritage Center garage and collection storage space with Heritage Operations leadership, project architects and suppliers.

What You'll Do:

  • Manage the fleet of historic and antique vehicles (700+ vehicles) at the Heritage Center.
  • Ensure vehicles are maintained in show condition and, when possible, operable condition.
  • Develop and execute a planned maintenance schedule for all vehicles.
  • Serve as single point contact for heritage vehicle loans and ensure all necessary arrangements and agreements are processed appropriately.
  • Oversee movement of vehicles within, into, and out of the building for internal and external events, museum loans, and other exhibits.
  • Maintain vehicle records.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on the composition of the collection, understand the significance and history of the individual vehicles, and advise leadership on procurement of new vehicles to enhance the collection.
  • Build and maintain relationships with associated automotive collections and museums to foster collaboration, coordinate loans, restoration, and maintenance of vehicles.
  • Establish relationships with potential donors/sellers to acquire and preserve significant vehicles for the collection.
  • Work closely with the heritage leadership team to strengthen and promote GM Heritage Operations.
  • Participate in the selection, orientation, supervision, and evaluation of paid and volunteer staff as required.




Additional Job Description

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in automotive fleet/collection management, repair, or restoration.
  • Highly developed communication and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to organize and plan effectively, often in an ambiguous and changing environment.
  • Ability to influence without authority.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small team to achieve both individual and shared objectives.

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in automotive repair and restoration.
  • Experience with the GM Heritage Vehicle Collection.
  • Knowledge of transportation, logistics, and handling of collector vehicles.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for preserving and presenting collector vehicles.
