Automotive Technician

General Description
The Automotive Technician is responsible for restoring and maintaining a selection of vehicles that are part of the Sloan Museum of Discovery Running Vehicle Collection.
Responsibilities
Include the following- other duties may be assigned
· Perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on vintage, classic, and unusual vehicles in the Running Vehicle Collection
· Diagnose mechanical issues, recommend appropriate solutions, propose suitable budgets, and offer accurate repair or maintenance timelines
· Maintain detailed service records for each vehicle in the Running Vehicle Collection
· Assist with vehicle preparation for public events, exhibitions, and educational demonstrations
· In partnership with the Exhibits Manager, coordinate with local vehicle-related groups for Sloan Museum vehicle representation at events
· Operate a hitched trailer to transport vehicles to community events
· Source parts and supplies, working within budget constraints
· Ensure safety and compliance with museum policies and industry standards
· Maintains a clean and organized shop environment
· Maintains regular and prompt attendance at work
· Displays professional and respectful behavior to all persons in the workplace
· Follows organizational policies and procedures
· Flexible schedule that may involve nights or weekends as appropriate for exhibiting vehicles
Oversees volunteers and/or interns in vehicle maintenance or transport
Education/Qualifications/Skills Required
· Valid Michigan driver’s license with a clean driving record
· 3 plus years experience as an automotive technician working with vintage and classic vehicles
· 3 plus years experience moving vehicles using trailers
· Strong understanding of automobile mechanical, electrical, and fuel systems
· Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
· Excellent documentation and organizational skills
· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs alone
· Ability to perform physical tasks related to vehicle maintenance including, but not limited to prolonged time standing or sitting, bending, etc.
· Ability to work in physically uncomfortable positions as needed for repairs
· Comfortable working in garage, event, and exhibit environments
